Driving yourself is probably the best way to see the country.
The major international car rental agencies are widely represented and there are also many local agencies as well. Camper vans and 4WD vehicles are also available. Some research on the internet prior to your visit can be a good idea.
The public road network is well developed and well sign-posted.
Since 1994 there has been a steady decline in road maintenance so that, although most major through-routes are in reasonable condition, this can not be taken for granted on all roads.
South Africa drives on the left.
Drivers must have an international driver's license and a minimum of 5 years' experience.
It is wise to drive defensively as standards vary greatly.
