Wolwefontein, a quaint village situated on the R75, was named after British Settlers discovered brown hyenas drinking from a nearby spring.

They mistook the hyenas for wolves, thus the name "wolf spring". Wolwefontein is in close proximity to many major tourist towns and attractions such as The Addo Elephant National Park, Baviaanskloof Wilderness Mega-Reserve, Cockscomb Mountain, Jansenville,  Steytlerville, Uitenhage, Kirkwood, and can be considered the half-way mark between Port Elizabeth and Graaff-Reinet.

Wolwefontein also borders the Karoo and Valley Bushveld regions, an area well-known for its wide variety of indigenous plants and succulents.
