More about the region south of the Orange River
The northern reaches of the Karoo Heartland, where the Eastern Cape meets the mighty Orange River, offer a striking blend of vast Karoo plains, dramatic waterways, and fascinating engineering landmarks. This remote frontier region stretches from Norvalspont in the west, along the southern shores of the Gariep Dam, through Oviston and Venterstad, to the impressive Hennie Steyn Bridge in the east.
At the heart of this landscape lies the vast Gariep Dam, South Africa’s largest dam, where the Orange River widens into an immense inland sea bordered by rolling Karoo hills.
The dam wall itself is an engineering marvel, towering 88 metres high, while the shimmering waters create a dramatic contrast against the arid, open countryside.
West of the dam, the historic settlement of Norvalspont sits quietly on the southern bank of the Orange River. Once an important railway crossing and military point during the Anglo-Boer War, today it is a peaceful Karoo outpost, rich in history and framed by river views and old bridges that tell stories of a bygone era.
Travelling eastward along the southern edge of the dam, the road winds through sweeping semi-desert scenery toward Oviston, a tiny settlement created during the construction of the Orange-Fish River Tunnel. This remarkable tunnel diverts water from the Orange River deep beneath the Karoo to irrigate the Eastern Cape interior, making Oviston a hidden gem where rugged natural beauty meets one of South Africa’s greatest water engineering achievements.
Nearby, Venterstad offers a glimpse into authentic Karoo country living. Once transformed into a bustling international hub during the building of the Gariep Dam, the town has returned to a quiet rural rhythm, surrounded by open plains, farmsteads, and the peaceful waters of the dam.
Further east, the journey culminates at the magnificent Hennie Steyn Bridge, spanning the Orange River between the Eastern Cape and the Free State. As one of the longest bridges in South Africa, this elegant structure carries both road and rail traffic high above the river, offering breathtaking views over the broad valley below and marking a dramatic gateway into the northern Karoo Heartland.
This northern edge of the Karoo Heartland is a place of big skies, wide waters, and quiet grandeur—where the stark beauty of the Karoo meets the life-giving power of the Orange River, creating a landscape that is both rugged and unexpectedly majestic.
