Middelburg Gereformeerde Kerk

Description
Ds Dirk Postma founded this congregation at Grootfontein in 1860. The church building was finished in 1862, and is the oldest “Gereformeerde Kerk” building in South Africa.
The congregation started with between 250 and 300 members. For the then minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in Middelburg, Rev. William Murray, it must have been a sad experience. He was still unmarried and lived with one of his elders, H.T.J. van der Walt, co-owner of Grootfontein, the farm on which the new Reformed Church congregation was founded. Van der Walt was even elected as an elder.
The building with its separate bell tower, still in use to this day, was declared a national monument in 1979.
