Steynsburg monuments and historic buildings

Description

Steynsburg has a number of historic buildings, churches and monuments in addition to the main listings from the town on this website.

These main listings can be found on the following links:
Steynsburg Reformed Church
Steynsburg Dutch Reformed Church
Bulhoek

Other interesting places include:

Holy Cross Anglican Church
The cornerstone was laid in 1902.
The building has a rough-hewn ashlar base with face-brick body and galvanised corrugated iron roof.

Wesleyan Methodist Church
Methodism reached the Eastern Cape with the 1820 Settlers and spread rapidly through the Karoo during the 19th century. After a church was established in Middelburg around 1890, the congregation there was responsible for several outlying preaching stations, including: Steynsburg, Schoombie and Rosmead.  This indicates that the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Steynsburg was already active by the 1890s, although it was administered from Middelburg rather than having its own resident minister.

The cornerstone of the church building was laid in 1912. The church is a plain hall-type church with red face-brick base and cast plaster finish below corrugated iron roof.

Steynsburg Town Hall
The town hall was originally built in 1907.
In recent years, the building has unfortunately fallen into a state of severe disrepair. Reports indicate it has been heavily vandalized, stripped of its plumbing and windows, and is currently largely abandoned.
