Standing tall just 8 km outside Cradock, in the wide-open landscapes of the Karoo, you will find Egg Rock, one of the region’s most unusual natural landmarks.

This enormous egg-shaped block of dolerite rises about 10 metres above the Karoo plains and weighs an estimated 480 tons. What makes it even more remarkable is the way it appears to be precariously balanced on its rocky base, as if one good push might send this giant “egg” rolling across the veld!

There is also a fascinating story behind the missing section of rock. Local legend says that a piece was struck and cleaved away by lightning in 1937, leaving the distinctive “crack” that gives Egg Rock its name.

But Egg Rock is about more than the rock itself. The journey takes you into the peaceful big-sky Karoo, where silence, rugged scenery and endless horizons create a wonderful feeling of being far away from civilisation, despite being only a short drive from Cradock.

Entrance is free, but be aware that the road is not in excellent condition and should only be attempted with a high-clearance vehicle.
