There is something very special about staying at Glen Avon. It’s a visit in South African history, a sense of timelessness and a magical feeling of serenity that you will experience while relaxing on this unique and historic working farm.

Glen Avon Farm is a 1820s family farm set in the heart of the Eastern Cape. The two self-catering units, Garden View and Hart Cottage, are located on the Old Homestead side of Glen Avon, whilst Pecan Cottage is ‘over the way’ next to The Retreat homestead.

Hart Cottage is a quaint family-style garden cottage that is an original 1817 thatched wattle and daub dwelling. It is set in a garden amongst oak trees and white stinkwoods, and gives a spectacular view of Avon Head across the pastures. It has three bedrooms and sleeps 5 people.

Pecan Cottage is a cosy cottage that is set amongst large pecan trees and lush rolling pastures. It’s a spacious 3-bedroomed, 6 person cottage that has a very cosy fireplace for chilly winter evenings.

Garden View Cottage is situated in the garden of the Old Homestead, Garden View, is a spacious self-catering cottage that comfortably accommodates 2 people.

For those outdoor enthusiasts there is fly fishing in the dams and mountain biking on fam tracks. Some of the historic buildings include the Water Mill, the shearing shed (barracks from the Boer War), the 200-year-old farmhouse, Hart Cottage and the Hart Vault in the family graveyard. Alison’s garden is beyond words, there’s a beautiful swimming pool and well-marked walking trails.

The bird life is abundant, over 270 species, with the option of guided birding outings for those who are looking for a ‘lifer’.

Farm activities include sheep and angora goat shearing, daily hand milking and herding of stock from various pastures.
